Did you know?... Bacteria were the first living organisms on Earth. They have been here for 4 billion years and arrived before the dinosaurs.

Early organisms would have respired anaerobically, as there was no oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere at this time.

It is thought the first bacteria would have created energy in a similar manner to today's yeast, breaking down sugars to form methane and carbon dioxide.
