The 2024 University of Edinburgh’s Tam Dalyell Prize for Excellence is awarded to Dr James Cook.

Now a ruined shell clinging to the side of the peel above Linlithgow Loch, Linlithgow Palace was once the great pleasure palace of the kings and queens of Scotland. It resounded to music sung by skilled musicians in magnificent surroundings.

Dr James Cook is determined to recapture its lost glory bringing together scientific acoustic research, historical archival work, archaeology, and performance to reconstruct the music within Virtual Reality.

He has been awarded the University of Edinburgh’s Tam Dalyell Prize for Excellence in Engaging the Public with Science in recognition of his work increasing the public understanding of music in pre-reformation Scotland.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
