The former Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh is now a creative hub for the arts with a host of studio and workshop spaces. Summerhall is open to the public all year round and hosts events in all the City's major festivals.
Summerhall is one of the main Science Festival venues, offering a Festival hub where you'll find a variety of innovative and interactive events and exhibitions as well as our pop-up book store and plenty of scientists and artists to mingle with over a drink in the bar.
During the Science Festival you’ll find it packed full of shows, drop-in activities and special events. With an exciting programme for children and families during the day and entertaining evenings for adults and teenagers, there’s a whole world of scientific adventure on offer. The Experimentarium is back – a laboratory zone filled with hands-on activities for all ages. And don’t miss the Edinburgh Mini Maker Faire which returns as our fabulous Festival finale. Blackwell’s pop-up bookshop will be open in the courtyard chalet.
Please note: On some days during the Festival we run large events at Summerhall which take over the majority of the building. On days where events such as these are running throughout the building there will be an admission fee for entry.
Food and drink is available throughout the day at the Summerhall Café and from noon until 9pm at The Royal Dick Bar.
There are 5 steps at the main entrance to the building. Wheelchair and limited-mobility access to Summerhall is via the side entrance on Summerhall Square. The entrance is clearly marked by the original Dick Vet gates. Outside the hours of 9am-6pm (Mon - Fri) and 9.30am-6pm (Weekends) there is an entry intercom that can be used to connect to the reception team. There is ramp access to the Royal Dick Bar and to the Café. The building has lift access to some First Floor and Basement spaces. For further accessibility information please contact our Box Office by calling 0844 557 2686 or emailing email@example.com
On most days, taxis & other vehicles can drop passengers off directly in the courtyard (using the vehicle gate on Summerhall Square & announcing their arrival using the intercom system), however there is no onsite public parking in Summerhall. On days that the courtyard is closed to vehicle access, taxis and other vehicles can drop passengers off directly outside the accessible entrance by the vehicle gate, in Summerhall Square.
You can travel to Summerhall on the following Lothian Buses services: 41, 42, 67.
Many of our venues in and around the city centre are easily accessible on foot and by public transport so please consider the environment when planning your travel to and from our events. Public transport information is available from Traveline Scotland - travelinescotland.com and 0871 200 22 33 - 24 hours a day.
