Edinburgh Science is committed to supporting upcoming talent and encouraging those who wish to build a career in science communication, events or festival management. As such, we are able to offer a limited number of placements each year to students in full time education that are interested in learning more about a particular area of our business.
We have recently reviewed our policy on placement opportunities and have set up a new structure for our placements that ensures we offer individuals on placement with us the best possible experience. We receive a number of enquiries about placements and unfortunately we cannot accommodate every request.
Please refer to the FAQs below for further information on the types of opportunities we offer.
The placement opportunities we offer are for academic work placements: i.e. specific department or project-based placements for students who require an internship of less than one year as part of a UK-based further or higher education course.
All placements are part time and we are happy to work around university schedules, but we expect placements to be two to three days per week.
Recruitment for placements is limited to students on relevant courses at local universities and further education institutions. Information on upcoming opportunities is circulated to selected university and further education contacts.
If you are a lecturer or tutor on a course relevant to festivals, events or science communication and would like to receive information about placement opportunities, please contact Cindy Cunningham, Head of HR by email or on 0131 553 0320.
Most opportunities take place in the run up to or during our annual Science Festival in Edinburgh each Easter, although we do also offer some opportunities out with this period. Dates for individual opportunities will vary and will be detailed in role descriptions when positions are advertised.
Placements with Edinburgh Science Festival offer the following benefits:
Regular mentoring and guidance
The chance to be part of one of the most innovative science festivals in the world
The opportunity to develop your skills and CV in your chosen professional area
We are unable to offer paid placements, but will cover lunch/travel expenses of up to £5 per day.
Following our recent review of our policy on placements and volunteering we have decided to concentrate our efforts in providing in-depth academic placement opportunities to ensure we offer participants a rich and rewarding experience. In light of this review, we no longer offer any other types of placement, internship or volunteering opportunities.
Unfortunately we are also not currently able to support speculative applications from individuals, so please do not contact us with enquiries about placements out with the opportunities outlined above.
If you have any further queries about our placement policy, please contact Cindy Cunningham, Head of HR by email or on 0131 553 0320.
